Veiligheid is skole se verantwoordelikheidAMBER KRIEL

oggendverkeerdiébesigepadoorsteekomsko-le in Cloetesville by te woon. Dieselfde geld indie middae wanneer hulle terugkeer huis toe.“Dis ’n gevaarlike pad daai,” hetmnr. Abra-

le, Jevan Mahana, vertel dat hy ’n aantal jareal hierdie besige pad oorsteek.“In daardie tyd was hier nog nooit polisie

Ineke Coetzee hetStellenbossers hier-oor gaan uitvra.

Babs Ludidi (28): “Ekweet nie hoe ek daaroormoet voel nie.

Mense vind gewoon-lik ’n manier of ’n ompadrondom sulke beperken-de sisteme.”

Maties no longerplay in Safa’ssecond leagueAfter a decision by the Stellen-bosch University to ratherspend money by investing inMaties Football, the Matiesfirst soccer team had to with-draw from the Safa SecondLeague.

“At the end of last year, Stellen-bosch University made the deci-sion to invest inMatiesFootball,”said Professor Leopoldt vanHuyssteen, executive director:OperationsandFinanceatSUandboard member of InnovUS.“At that stage we were contrac-

tually committed, which wouldhave made it difficult to invest toour maximum capacity in theteam.“To enable us to do so, the SU

needed full ownership of the fran-chise.“Maties Football cancelled the

contract toplayintheSafaSecondLeague amicably and will revisitthis decisionat the endof this sea-son.”The Maties team now plays in

the SAB league. This was based on the decision

to create a pipeline of young play-ers to play for the club. This also coincides with the

University’s focus on youth soc-cer development. The SU is set to become a driv-

ingforceontheSouthAfricansoc-cer scene with the launch of a de-velopment initiative spearhead-ed by InnovUS, the university’sinnovation agency. The initiative will boost soccer

at two levels, namelyby investingin the development of soccerskills at grassroots level withinthe communities surroundingStellenbosch, and by creating anelite soccer environment at theuniversity, whichwill attract top-notch players to its ranks. The recent introduction of the

Varsity Cup for soccer has high-lightedtheimportanceofdevelop-

ing football at university level. The aim of the SU Soccer Pro-

gramme is to groom the MatiesFirst soccer team into a profes-sional team, which can competewith the top teams.“This will be achieved by

means of world-class administra-tion, team restructuring, im-proved talent identification andrecruitment, investment in coacheducation and full-time scientificsupport and testing.”One of the initiatives the Tot-

tenham Hotspurs InternationalPlayer Development Programmetakesplace from2–6April atPaulRoos Gymnasium in Stellen-bosch.The programme will give play-

ers the opportunity to gain inval-uableexperienceonthepitch,andwill also serve to educate localcoaches in this regard. In addition, during May this

year a community soccer pitch inJamestown will benefit from theinstallation of four solar-poweredfloodlights, therebyextendingtheuse of the facility into the eveninghours. This lighting project has been

made possible by a partnershipbetween Philips and the RoyalNetherlands Football Associa-tion (KNVB) and the aim is to geta further four tosixPhilipsKNVBLight Centres sponsored withinthewider Stellenbosch communi-ty.InJunethisyearaKNVBCoach

Education Course will take placein Stellenbosch.“Our aim is to build the SU Soc-

cer Programme into the leadingdevelopment programme inSouthAfrica,” saysMsAnitaNel,CEO of InnovUS.“I am confident that we are

more than capable in this regard, given our world-class facilities, expertise in the field of sport sci-ence and our geographical loca-tion.”
