Vasgebind, wreed aangerand en daarvan oortuig dat sy pa deur ‘n spul sadistiese rowers doodgeskiet gaan word, het ‘n 12jarige seun onwrikbaar by sy pa gestaan.

“Pappa, ek’s lief vir jou ... jy’s my hero,” was Justin Pieterse se afskeidswoorde aan sy pa, Stefan, ‘n bekende sakeman en evangelis van Makhado (Louis Trichardt).

“Ek sal dit nooit vergeet nie,” het ‘n steeds merk-baar emosionele Stefan Maandag aan die Zoutpans-berger gesê. Hy en Justin is Saterdag op hulle plaas Our Place, nie ver uit op die Braambospad nie, oorval deur vier gewapende mans. Kort tevore het hulle nog sorgeloos om ‘n braaivleisvuurtjie saam met vriende gekuier. Niemand, het Stefan gesê, het in daardie stadium notisie geneem van Justin se Jack Russel, Pippie, wat die heeltyd na die bosse se kant toe geblaf het nie.

Nadat die vriende huis toe is, wou Justin nog vir ‘n wyle saam met sy pa kuier om die vuur, wat net buite die heiningdraad van die huis gemaak is. Pa en seun se rustige oomblik was egter van korte duur. Skielik het daar ‘n gewapende man uit die bos gekom en ‘n 9mm-pistool teen Justin se kop gedruk.

Dadelik was daar nog twee mans, ook gewapen met pistole, wat vir Stefan vasgehou en begin skop

en slaan het. Hulle was ongemaskerd en het vinnig Stefan en Justin se arms agter hul rûe vasgebind met kabelbande. Stefan se regterbeen is erg verswak ná hy al talle operasies ondergaan het daaraan, en een van die rowers het vir Stefan gesê hy weet van dié been.

Wat volgende met Justin gebeur het, het Stefan se ouerhart laat bloei en die trane het opnuut weer gevloei terwyl hy die traumatiese gebeure herleef het. “... en toe, toe vat hulle hom in die huis ... en ek is daar buite ... en ek weet nie wat hulle gaan doen met hom nie; almal het gewere,” het Stefan die woorde uitgewroeg.

Hy moes hulpeloos luister hoe Justin deur die rowers gedreig word om die kluis vir hulle oop te sluit. “Ek het vir Justin geskreeu om net alles vir hulle te gee, en alles te doen wat hulle van hom vra,” sê Stefan.

Die rowers het ‘n groot bedrag kontant uit die kluis gevat wat Stefan van ‘n kliënt ontvang het nadat die banke reeds vir die naweek gesluit het. Dit het nie die rowers tevrede gestel nie. Hulle het volgens Stefan bly vra waar die groot kluis met die guns was. Al wapens wat daar nog in die huis was, was die twee se lug- en gasgewere.

Eers in daardie stadium het die derde rower vir Stefan die huis ingevat, waar die mans hulle opnuut begin slaan het. (Vervolg op p. 2)

Een van die rowers het vir Justin in Engels gesê om sy pa te groet, voordat hy doodgeskiet gaan word. Hulle het toe die pistoolloop in Stefan se mond gedruk.

Hierop het Pippie opgespring en die man aan die hand gebyt. Stefan het by die man gepleit om nie vir hom of vir Pippie voor Justin te skiet nie, en die rower het hom na sy kantoor langsaan gevat.

“Toe ek nou in die kantoor is, toe sê hy vir my ‘Okay staan op jou knieë’ .... en toe skreeu Justin net vir my ‘Pappa ek’s lief vir jou, jy’s my hero’... toe skreeu ek vir hom ‘Moenie worry nie, alles sal fi ne wees, Mamma sal mooi na jou kyk’.”

Hierop het die rower Stefan se kop op die grond vasgetrap, reg om hom te skiet en Stefan het vir oulaas vir Justin geskreeu dat hy vir hom lief is, voordat alles binne hom stil geword het. “Ek het net vrede in my hart gehad – ek het net vrede gehad – toe sê ek ‘Here ek’s nou by jou’.”

Die man het nie vir Stefan geskiet nie. Hy en die ander rowers het in ‘n ander taal gepraat, waarna Stefan gedwing is om sy minibus se sleutels aan hulle te gee. Intussen het ‘n vierde rower ook opgedaag. Dié man was gemaskerd, en hy het saam met die ander drie al die waardevolle elektroniese toestelle begin ontkoppel en in die bussie gelaai. “Hulle was professioneel; hulle het niks uitgeruk nie, en het tot doktershandskoene gedra,” sê Stefan.

Nadat die rowers ‘n lap in beide se monde gedruk het en dit toegeplak het, is hulle in ‘n kas toegemaak. Ook hul voete is vasgebind.

Justin het kopgehou en die lap halfpad uit sy mond losgewoel. Hy het ‘n slim plan gehad om die rowers die skrik op die lyf te jaag. Hy het vir die rowers geskreeu dat sy pa ‘n hartaanval het,

en vir Stefan gevra om te maak of hy dood is as hulle kom kyk.

Die rowers het een kyk vir die “dooie” Stefan gegee, ‘n boekrak voor die kas geskuif en op die vlug geslaan. In die donker het pa en seun gewag op enige geluid van die rowers, voordat Stefan die boekrak met sy skouers weggestamp het. Onge-lukkig het die rowers die kantoordeur van buite gesluit, en Stefan moes die deur stukkend skop, met sy hande en voete nog vasgebind, om uit die huis te kom.

Hulle het die plaaswerkers gaan wakker maak en hulp ontbied.

Stefan se bussie is met behulp van die opsporing-stelsel verlate naby Bela-Bela gevind. Die polisie was teen druktyd besig om al die leidrade op te volg, nadat hulle ook goeie vingerafdrukke in die bussie gekry het.

Vir Stefan en Justin lê daar egter nog ‘n lang pad voor vir die emosionele wonde om te genees. Beide het alreeds vir berading gegaan. “As mens nou daarna kyk, was die hand van die Here daarin ... Justin sê juis dit kan nou met ons net beter gaan.”

The driver of this small truck sustained several injuries after his truck crashed into the safety railing inside the Hendrik Verwoerd Tunnels on the N1 North on Monday morning. The crash severely disrupted traffi c fl ow. It is suspected that the driver, travelling towards Musina, might have tried to overtake another vehicle, just as he was driving into the second tunnel. Swerving away from an oncoming truck, the smaller truck skidded along the safety railing and came to a halt at the end of the tunnel. The whole right side of the truck and the cab was torn off. The driver was taken to the Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital for treatment.

A team effort between environmental crime investigators of SANParks and the organised crime unit of the SAPS led to the arrest of four suspected rhino poachers.

The four men, Job Basi Tlou of Mahlanga in Mpumalanga, Percy Manengena of Alldays, and Johannes Podile and Lebala

Sematla, both of the farm Den Staat, which neighbours the Ma-pungubwe National Park, were arrested last Friday (15th).

They are suspected of poach-ing and dehorning a white rhino in Mapungubwe on 23 July. All four appeared on charges relating to the illegal entry of a national park, poaching and possession of

rhino horns.According to SANParks’ act-

ing head of communications, Reynold Thakhuli, the men’s case was postponed after they briefly appeared in the Louis Trichardt District Court on Mon-day. They will remain in custody until their next appearance on 26 August.

Ná 46 jaar se getroude lewe saam, het haar man in haar arms gesterf.

“Pa rus nou...” het Petro van den Berg vir haar seun Morné gesê, nadat haar egge-noot, die welbekende André van den Berg (67), verlede Vrydag in die Zoutpansberg Privaathospitaal in Makhado (Louis Trich-ardt) sy stryd teen bloedkanker verloor het. Kort voor dit het André nog vir Petro ‘n drukkie gegee.

Sedert Oktober verlede jaar het die Soutpansberg-gemeenskap saam met die Van den Berg-egpaar gebid en gehoop, nadat André met bloedkanker gediag-noseer is. In Januarie vanjaar moes hy sy haarsnypraktyk, Van den Berg Mans Haarkapper, na 45 jaar se diens sluit weens die intensiewe behandeling wat hy moes ontvang. As boorling van die Soutpansberg was hy die derde generasie haarkapper in sy familie.

Groot was inwoners se blydskap en verligting toe André einde Junie vanjaar aangekondig het dat hy gesond is en weer

Hartseer vaarwel aan Andrésy praktyk gaan open. Sowat twee weke gelede moes André en sy familie egter die slegte nuus ontvang – die kanker is terug.

André is verlede Vrydagoggend in die Zoutpansberg Privaathospitaal opgeneem, nadat hy begin kla het van erge pyn. Sy kinders en aangetroude familie was juis almal op pad na hom toe vir ‘n familie-ete op Sondag.

“Ons het elke jaar oor Kerstyd ‘n fam-ilie-ete. Verlede jaar kon ons nie saam kuier nie, weens my pa se siekte. Ons het dit toe goedgedink om almal nou Sondag weer lekker saam te kuier. Dit het baie, baie vinnig gebeur ... ons het gedink ons het nog tyd,” het dogter Linda Naudé Maandag gesê.

Die Van den Berg-egpaar was baie lief vir die Kruger Nasionale Wildtuin en het so gereeld moontlik vir ‘n paar dae daarheen weggebreek. Morné vertel dat, as gevolg van sy siekte die laaste paar maande, sy pa-hulle nie meer wildtuin toe kon gaan nie. Hy vertel dat hy toe sowat twee weke gelede gereël het dat sy pa en ma einde van hierdie week saam met hulle weer bietjie wildtuin toe sou gaan. “Hy het vir my gesê hy dink nie hy sal kan gaan nie. Ek dink hy het geweet,” sê Morné.

Baie inwoners van die Soutpansberg sal onthou hoe André en Petro in Februarie 2006 die nuushooftrekke gehaal het, juis na afloop van ‘n besoek aan die wildtuin. Hulle voertuig het op ‘n stil naweek in ‘n afgeleë, oorspoelde modderdrif in die wildtuin vasgeval. Ná ure se wag het hulle besef niemand gaan kom om hulle te help nie, waarna André, ongewapen, 25 kilo-meter deur gevaarlike leeugebied geloop het om hulp te ontbied. Petro het intussen hulpeloos in die oorspoelde voertuig agtergebly. Die drama het oor ‘n periode van 24 uur afgespeel.

Die afgelope 45 jaar het André, uit

die aard van sy werk, baie, baie vriende gemaak. Hy sal veral onthou word vir sy humor. “Tot kort voor sy dood het hy nog gelag en tyd gehad vir ‘n grappie vertel,” sê die familie. Eweneens is Petro welbekend as eienaar van Petro Van den Berg Eiendomme.

Petro het vertel dat mens letterlik ‘n boek sou kon skryf oor haar en André se huwelik. “Van dag een af was dit ‘n avon-tuur – dinge wat mooi was en dinge wat sleg was ... maar ons het altyd daardeur gekom. Dit was genade,” het Petro gesê.

Een van die slegste dinge waardeur die Van Den Berg-egpaar moes worstel, is die aand toe André skrams in die bors en Petro in die kop gewond is tydens ‘n gewapende roof by hul huis, ‘n paar maande na hul oorlewingstryd in die wildtuin in 2006. Wonderbaarlik het beide sy en André die aanval oorleef. Later sou dit aan die lig kom dat die man wat hulle geskiet het, Lesley Manganye, ook verantwoordelik was vir die moord op mnr. Ben Fisser en ‘n string ander geweldsmisdade. Hy is in Mei 2010 tot 256 jaar gevangenisstraf gevonnis.

Vir Petro is die dood van haar si-elsgenoot die afgelope 46 jaar bitter hart-seer, maar sy het berusting, sê sy. Sy sê die afgelope paar maande was vir haar en André baie spesiaal en in ‘n groot mate het hulle tyd gehad om op ‘n mooi manier van mekaar afskeid te neem. “Ons het aande omgelê en gesels ... tot die dood ons skei ...” het Petro gesê.

‘n Roudiens vir wyle André is Woens-dag vanuit die Volle Evangelie Kerk in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) gehou. Hy word oorleef deur sy vrou Petro, dogter Linda en skoonseun Gerhard, seun Morné en skoondogter Martie, en dogter Brenda en skoonseun Adaan Kotzé, asook agt kleinkinders and twee agterkleinkinders.Wyle André van den Berg (67).

Een van Laerskool Louis Trichardt se “sonstraal kinders” is Maandag tragies op slag dood in ‘n motorongeluk op pad skool toe.

Bontle Makgoba, ‘n Graad 1-leer-ling van dié skool, was Maandag-oggend saam met haar ma, mev. Esther Makgoba, en babasussie in die motor. Hulle was op pad terug na Makhado (Louis Trichardt), nadat hulle die naweek by familie in die Munnik-streek gekuier het. Esther het bestuur en het glo tussen Munnik en Soekmekaar beheer oor haar voertuig verloor. Daar was nie ‘n ander voertuig betrokke nie. Die voertuig het die pad verlaat en gerol.

Esther is ernstig beseer en is per helikopter na die MediClinic in Polokwane vervoer, waar sy behan-deling ontvang het vir ondermeer

‘n vergruisde knieskyf. Bontle se jonger sussie was ongedeerd.

Die onderwysers en personeel van Laerskool Louis Trichardt het gesê hulle was geskok om van Bontle se afsterwe te hoor, en treur saam met haar klasmaats. Bontle is deur een van haar onderwysers, mev. Elsjé Linde, beskryf as ‘n liefdevolle en opgewekte meisietjie wat altyd gelag het, en altyd besig was om an-der aan te steek met haar lag. “Haar sonnige en warm persoonlikheid het vir haar vriende gemaak, waar ook al sy gegaan het,” het Elsjé gesê.

Die skool het hulle opregte mee-gevoel uitgespreek met klein Bontle se ma, wat tans nog aansterk in die hospitaal, en haar familie. Begraf-nisreëlings was teen druktyd nog nie bekend nie.

The criminal case of senior regional magistrate Ronnie Rambau has long since reached the ears of Parliament and they are worried.

Following Rambau’s appearance in the Messina Magistrate’s Court this week, the Zoutpansberger made a few enquiries into Rambau’s suspension as magistrate. What the newspaper found was that Par-liament might have good reason to be concerned.

Contained within the latest minutes of Parlia-ment’s Select Committee for Security and Justice was a fairly detailed account of Rambau’s endeav-ours since his arrest. The minutes were made avail-able by the Parliamentary Monitoring Group. In terms of the Magistrates Act, Rambau’s employer, the Magistrate’s Commission (MC), must report to the justice committee every three months after the provisional suspension of a magistrate and keep them updated.

Rambau was arrested on 5 February 2010 for alleged corruption. Nine months later, he was pro-visionally suspended by the MC, on 4 November (See article above).

The newspaper was able to determine that Rambau’s disciplinary hearing started in February this year. His hearing was preceded by a pre-trial conference on 9 December last year to resolve the many disputes that Rambau had over his pending hearing. His biggest objection was that the crim-inal case had yet to be finalised and that it would therefore be unfair to penalize him beforehand.

Since his suspension in 2010, Rambau’s hearing has been postponed more than 10 times. During this time, he appointed two different legal repre-sentatives and asked for full disclosure of the MC’s evidentiary documents and statements, which was granted to him twice. During September 2011, Rambau failed to attend a hearing, due to “medical reasons.” He handed in a doctor’s note certifying that he had “diabetes mellitus” and was unfit to appear. It was on this hearing date that he was spotted shopping at the local Checkers.

His hearing finally started on 17 February this year when the first witness, a police official who also gave evidence in Rambau’s corruption trial,

testified for the MC. On 5 March, however, pro-ceedings came to a grinding halt.

On this day, the newspaper has learned, a shout-ing match broke out when Rambau’s new attorney disputed the authenticity of the evidence. The evidence in question was some of the telephone conversations intercepted by the SAPS while they were investigating Rambau and his co-accused. These recordings had already been presented by the State as proof of Rambau’s alleged corrup-tion. During this time, his lawyer had offered no objection that it become evidence and consented to its authenticity.

Despite the MC’s begging the presiding officer to accept the court transcript of the criminal trial as a true record of proceedings, the hearing was stopped and postponed. Rambau’s attorney demanded that the telephone recordings, which had been saved on a disc, be unsealed, so that the contents could be played back and compared with evidence given during the court proceedings.

Following the MC’s report, a people’s repre-sentative of the ANC (African National Congress) questioned their efficiency. “It could be that the main problem was with individuals being charged, rather than with the system,” he said. He expressed his concern over the matter by also pointing to other magistrates, from different provinces, whose suspensions had to be lifted in order to cope with overburdened court rolls. He further pointed out that it would also be difficult to replace Rambau as he was still receiving his salary.

From the committee’s minutes, it further became clear that Parliament was “concerned” about post-ponements and delays in Rambau’s case.

The general view of committee attendees was that loopholes in the law were being exploited, resulting in cases that were indefinitely unresolved. They were particularly concerned that some of the cases were now being passed on to the fifth Parliament.

Mr Hans Meijer of the MC said in rebuttal that his committee had to be thorough when ensuring that misconduct inquiries were procedural and fair, even though it was a very time-consuming matter.

In the meantime, the MC was mute on when Rambau’s misconduct trial was expected to con-tinue.

The criminal case against a senior regional magistrate from Makhado (Louis Trichardt) took an interesting turn this week.

Magistrate Ronnie Rambau had to face the charge of corruption against him alone. He ap-peared in the Messina Magistrate’s Court on Mon-day, without his co-accused, ex-prosecutor Estene Willemse and attorney Tivoneleni Edmond Lubisi. All three are currently facing charges of corruption and conspiracy to commit corruption. They were arrested in February 2010 during a police trap.

During the State’s case against the three men, evidence was provided in the form of telephone records that the SAPS had intercepted during their investigation. This evidence revealed how the three men had allegedly worked together to influence the outcome of court cases. Lubisi would allegedly con-tact Willemse if he had a “client” who was willing to pay to have his case disappear. They would then

quibble about their “cut of the deal”, after which Willemse would phone Rambau to tell him that he had an early case to attend to the following day. Rambau would then - for a fee - either dismiss the case or just let it slip through the cracks.

On Monday, bench warrants for the arrest of both Lubisi and Willemse were issued after they failed to appear in court.

These latest developments in Rambau’s case are described, in the law enforcement world, as one of many delaying tactics. Even the South African Parliament’s Select Committee for Security and Justice, when addressed earlier this year by the Magistrate’s Commission, expressed their “partic-ular concern” about the matter. Rambau and his co-accused’s case has faced several postponements in the past as well. Lubisi and Willemse have, in the meantime, started con-ducting their own defences. Rambau himself has

changed lawyers on more than one occasion, de-laying p r o c e -

dures even further.On 9 April last year, Rambau also asked the

presiding magistrate to withdraw from the trial. Rambau claimed that the magistrate had befriended some of the state witnesses and that this could have a negative influence on the outcome of his trial.

When the magistrate rejected his application, Rambau turned to the High Court, who also rejected his application to have the presiding magistrate withdraw from the case. If the High Court had granted Rambau’s application, it would have seen his whole trial start afresh.

During his court appearance on Monday, Rambau and his attorney were present, and it

was expected that the case would proceed. It was anticipated that Rambau would start testifying, since the State had already closed its case on 17 October 2011.

On Tuesday, Lubisi and Willemse were located. Willemse provided a sick note, and his warrant was cancelled. Lubisi, on the other hand, will have to appear in court again on 2 September to explain his absence. Failing which, he will be arrested and his bail retracted.

All three men are expected to appear in court again next year on 2 February, when the corruption trial is expected to continue for the whole week.

Members of the Louis Trichardt SPCA were involved in an epic struggle on Monday to save the life of a young cow that had fallen into a cement water dam.

The drama unfolded on the farm Nooitgedacht along the Vivo road. According to local animal inspector Mr Lawrence Khodobo, they received a phone call from the farm manager, Mr Jopie van der Berg, at around 15:00, requesting assistance to get a stray cow out of one of their cement dams. The cow was noticed inside the dam earlier that morning, but the farm workers’ attempt to get it out proved fruitless. Apparently, the thirsty cow strayed onto the farm, noticed the dam and wanted to drink water. She fell into the 1,8m-deep dam, however. The owner of the cow is unknown as it is not branded and only has an ear tag.

“We rushed out to the farm and, upon arrival, saw that we had our work cut out for us. The cow was standing up to her neck in the water, but the cement wall was too steep for her to merely climb out again. We realised that we had to construct some kind of ramp to get the cow out again,” said Lawrence.

Making use of some scrap metal sheets lying around, the farm workers braved the cold water to set up the ramp. In the meantime, members of the local fi re brigade, Messrs M J Makondo and J M Selepe, were also quick to respond and came to assist.

Building the ramp was one thing, but getting the

cow to notice that this was actually her escape route was another thing.

“The cow was very agitated with us, but it would seem that she later realised that we were trying help. We herded her to the ramp, put a rope around her neck and then gently eased her onto the ramp. Brute muscle power was then needed when she came to the top of the ramp to fi nally pull her over the wall and out of the dam,” said Lawrence. The whole rescue expedition lasted about three hours.

Finally out of harm’s way, the cow seemed relieved, said Lawrence. “At fi rst I thought she was going to fi ght with us, but she stood quite still to allow us to remove the rope from her neck. She then rejoined her herd,” said Lawrence.

Lawrence said the cow had not suffered any injuries, apart from being fatigued. “We were very relieved that we were able to save the animal. At some stage, we were starting to lose hope, but everyone kept on going,” said Lawrence.

Lawrence expressed his sincere thanks towards the farm manager, his workers and the members of the fi re brigade for their valued assistance. “It was not even their own cow, but they still helped until the cow was fi nally rescued.”

Ms Bea Reimer, local SPCA manager, also commended the farm personnel and fi re brigade, with special reference to Lawrence and Mr Patrick Mutandari, also from the local SPCA. “I take my hat off to these people for the great work they are doing,” she said.

Is this just a case of very bad parking manners or blatant arrogance? Several pedestrians and shop owners questioned the abilities and attitude of this driver when he disregarded traffi c rules on Saturday to park on the sidewalk in Songozwi Street, Makhado. Shop owners complained that he was blocking the fl ow of pedestrians and the entrance to their shops, but he apparently did not care much and merely remarked that “this is the way I park”.

• ROADHOGS CHARITY RAL-LY Die Roadhogs van Makhado (Louis Trich-ardt) se jaarlikse Charity Rally vind plaas vanaf 29 tot 31 Augustus.

Die naweek se aktiwiteite vind plaas by die munisipale karavaanpark, met die hekke wat Vrydag om 12:00 open. Geld wat tydens die naweek ingesamel word, sal vanjaar aan die Lou-is Trichardt DBV geskenk word. Soos gewoonlik sal daar ‘n massarit deur die dorp wees, asook lekker kos, musiek, speletjies, ‘n kontantkroeg en talle stalletjies. Wat vermaak betref, sal Ricky Faber Vrydag en Saterdag sing, met Juan Bouch-er wat besoekers Saterdagaand sal vermaak. Die vleistafel met sy bekostigbare wild-, vark-, bees- en skaapvleis is altyd gewild, om nie eers van die goedkoop biltong nie. Daar is ook kerrie-en-rys, pasteie, pannekoek en hamburgers, asook gebak en poeding.

Die handwerkstalletjie beloof sy gewone ver-rassings en die kinders kan hulle rande kom rek by die wit-olifant en die tombola tafels. Verder is daar ook ’n groot verskeidenheid kraakvars groen te, asook plante te koop. Die kerk se jeug bied X-box speletjies aan en hulle gaan ook kyk na die kleinspan met hulle spesiale “Nanny” diens. ‘n Verdere bonus vanjaar is die afval stalletjie. Vandalism seems to be the biggest challenge the Makhado and Vhembe municipalities face with regard to proper service delivery.

During a recent oversight visit conducted by the DA’s shadow minister for Cooperative Gover-nance and Traditional Affairs, Mr Kevin Mileham (MP), and local DA councillor Brian du Plooy to the municipal waste treatment plant, they found the plant to be totally non-functional. “The DA is outraged at the negligence demonstrated ... in manag-ing its water and sewerage infrastructure,” Du Plooy stated in a press release.

It was found that the town’s sewage flows into the plant, but none of the settling dams are operating. None of the aerators is working either, and the scoops are not turning. “The staff at the plant indicated that the facility manager had not been on site for several days, and no work was taking place,” Du Plooy said. He added that the situation is so bad that raw sewage is left to flow directly into the wetland area adjacent to the plant, which then drains into the Spies Dam and Sand River. “The Spies Dam and the Sand

River are sources of water for local communities downstream for drinking, cleaning and watering animals,” Du Plooy said.

Du Plooy said that while good progress was be-ing made in constructing a new sewerage treatment plant, it would only be operational in 2015. “In the interim, the existing plant is clearly inadequate to meet the needs of the town. Contributing to this issue is the municipality’s lack of a technical direc-

tor. This critical post has been vacant for more than a year,” Du Plooy said. He said the DA would demand an immediate investigation by the Department of En-vironmental Affairs and the Green Scorpions. “Un-

less this matter is dealt with within 14 days, the DA will be forced to lay charges against the municipal manager in terms of the National Environmental Waste Management Act,” said Du Plooy.

The Vhembe District Municipality (VDM), as responsible authority for the waste treatment plant, was asked to comment on the situation at the plant. They put the blame for the situation at the plant solely of vandals. “Vandalism of the waste-water

Ralushai again acknowledged that the inflow of sewage exceeds the plant’s design capacity. “Hence Vhembe embarked on the construction of a new plant to augment the existing plant. The new plant should be operational before the end of 2014 [December],” Ralushai said.

At present, Ralushai said, civil and electrical works at the new plant are 88% completed. “Up-grading works at the plant show commitment that Vhembe wants to address sewer leakages and also considers the community health risks seriously, but we call upon members of the community to assist in fighting crime,” he said. He was referring to the continuous vandalism of infrastructure.

About three weeks ago, AfriForum claimed a victory with regard to helping restore the water supply to the town of Makhado (Louis Trichardt), with the handing over of 10 refurbished municipal boreholes by contractors to the VDM. On Tuesday, however, it came to light that some of these bore-holes had fallen prey to vandals and copper cable thieves once more, resulting in another forced shutdown for repairs. The town is also constantly being plagued by vandals who destroy and dam-age municipal traffic signs. This led to Makhado municipal spokesperson Mr Louis Bobodi’s stating in July that they would start replacing steel traffic sign posts with wooden posts as thieves keep on stealing them to sell as scrap metal.

Bayer CropScience AG has submitted an application to the Registrar: Genetically Modifi ed Organisms Act for the intentional introduction of a genetically modifi ed organism into the environment of South Africa.

The genetically modifi ed organism under study is the cotton species Gossypium hirsutum (Upland cotton), derived from the conventional cross of transformation event GHB614, named “Glytol”, the stacked cotton “TwinLink” and event COT102.

Event GHB614 introduced a single copy of the 2mepsps gene from Zea mays. TwinLink cotton is derived from the conventional cross between events GHB119 and T304-40. Event GHB119 contains single copies of the bar gene from Streptomyces hygroscopicus and the cry2Ae gene from Bacillus thuringiensis. Event T304-40 introduced single copies of the bar gene from Streptomyces hygroscopicus and the cry1Ab gene from Bacillus thuringiensis. Event COT102 contains the vip3Aa19 and aph4 genes originating from Bacillus thuringiensis and E. coli, respectively.

The 2mepsps and bar genes provide tolerance to herbicides with the active ingredients glyphosate and glufos-inate-ammonium, respectively. The cry1Ab, cry2Ae and vip3Aa19 genes provide resistance to lepidopteran insects. The aph4 gene was used as a selectable marker in the development of COT102 whereas the 2mepsps gene was used as a selectable marker in the development of the stacked cotton.

The objective of this release is to conduct an agronomic assessment of GLT x COT102 in the South African cotton production environment. This application is not for the production of food or feed products.

The current application is for release on a farmland in the Limpopo province near the town of Groblersdal. The site has been used for the production of irrigated summer and winter crops for decades. The proposed trial will not ex-ceed 1 hectare where a minimum isolation distance of 300 m from other cotton varieties will be maintained.

At the completion of the trial, all cotton plants will be harvested and the seed processed at a gin. Seeds from GLT x COT102 plants will be exported to the USA for further research and development. All remaining seed will be destroyed by mechanical crushing, and all remaining trial plant material will be destroyed at the trial site by slashing. The trial site will either be left fallow or planted with a different crop. The fi eld will be monitored for the emergence of volunteer cotton.

Die Weg, die Waarheid en die Lewe

Openbaring 22:1-7

Paulus was ‘n sendeling wat die evangelie verkondig het. Hy is geslaan, hy is in die tronk gegooi, hy het skipbreuk gely en hy het baie gely deur die Here te dien. Tog het hy geweet aan die einde van sy lewe wag daar ‘n oorwinningskroon op hom, en nie net vir hom nie, maar vir almal wat lief is vir die Here Jesus. Alhoewel ons geen beloning verdien nie, beloon God Sy kinders op die mees wonderlike wyse vir hul getrouheid.

Lees 2 Tim. 4:8. God se beloning stel nooit teleur nie. Die ewige lewe is wat God aan Sy kinders gee. Ons sal saam met Jesus, en al Sy heiliges, lewe. In die hemel is daar nie meer sonde, dood, trane of pyn nie, net ewigdurende vreugde in die Here se teenwoordigheid. Openb. 22:1-7 gee vir ons ‘n prentjie van sommige van die wonders wat wag op almal wat lief is vir ons Here Jesus. Daarmee saam nog die oorwinningskroon.

Indien jy weergebore is het jy die-selfde verwagting. Al die kinders van God het iets wonderliks om na uit te sien. Geen een van God se belonings sal teleurstel nie.

Tussendeur die reise oorsee spandeer Daisy en Bernard tyd op die plaas agter die berg. Die stad wil egter nie altyd net suid van die tolhekke bly nie en volg Daisy tot op die plaas. Vandeesweek is dit in die gestalte van ‘n dik rooi boek wat gesondheidsvreugdes belowe, maar ‘n paar opoff erings eis ...

Bernard kom, soos gewoonlik wanneer hulle op die plaas is,

tienuur huistoe vir ontbyt. Uit die rooi kombuis tref buitengewoon wonderlike kosgeure sy neus – spek, wors, niertjies, eiers ... Sy mond water.

“More, my mooiste Daisy! Wat vier ons dat jy vir ons so ‘n fees-maal berei vir brêkfi s?” Bernard sit sy arms om Daisy se lyf waar sy voor die gasstoof staan en kos maak en soen haar in die nek. “Mmm, dit ruik heerlik!”

“Praat jy nou van my of die kos, Bernard?” fl ankeer Daisy. “Kom sit, dan skep ek vir jou op. Jy sal nie glo as ek jou vertel watter boek ek gister van Amazon gekry het nie! Dit is besig om ‘n revolusie in Suid-Afrika te veroorsaak.”

Bernard kreun. “Nee regtig, Dai-sy. Ek hoop nie dis die een of ander obskure politieke megalomaniak se gegorrel oor grondhervorming nie? Ons het genoeg revolusies en róói idees gehad vir ‘n rukkie...” Hy kyk betekenisvol na die vars-geverfde rooi mure van die kombuis en rol sy oë. Daisy skater van die lag.

“Waar is die pap van-oggend, Daise? En is die lemoensap klaar? Ek gaan juis vanmiddag in dorp toe, jy moet onthou om ‘n

lysie te maak. Maak vir ons ‘n paar stukkies roosterbrood, asseblief my mooiste?”

“Dis die ding, Bernard. Dís die revolusie – niks meer brood of pap of aartappels nie! Ook nie vrugte of vrugtesap nie en beslis geen sjokolade nie.”

‘n Lig kom agter Bernard se blouselblou oë op. “O. Is dit die dieët van daai Tim ou? Nukke of so iets? Hy verander blykbaar sy kos-idees so saam met die seisoene,” terg Bernard. “Maar ek weet ook nie so mooi nie, Daisy – hoekom is jy nou op dié dieët? Jy lyk vir my pragtig!”

“Hei, ou Barries, het jy al bietjie skuins voor die spieël gestaan vandat ons teruggekom het van Duitsland af? Al daai eisbein met sauerkraut en brat kartoffeln, om nie eers van die vaatjies bier te praat nie! Daar is aansienlik meer van jou om voor lief te wees, veral hier rondom die middellyf...”

“Jy bedoel dat ék nou op hierdie dieët is, Daisy? Sáám met jou?” grom Bernard. “Niks pap nie?

Niks aartappels en seker rys ook nie? Niks kluitjies saam met die potjiekos nie? Niks toebroodjies of van daardie lekker sodabrood van jou nie?” Daisy skud net sedig haar kop.

“Stampkoring? Bruinrys?” probeer hy weer. “Dis mos vol ve-sel en baie gesond! O nee, en geen pasta nie, Daisy? Net nie pasta nie...” Die gedagte vervul Bernard duidelik met afgryse.

“Dis tyd dat ons bietjie na ons gesondheid omsien, Bernard. Ons word nie jonger nie, netnou kry die cholesterol jou voor ek genoeg gehad het van jou. Ek het planne vir ons om met grys koppies te sit en cocktails drink terwyl die son oor die see ondergaan!”

Daar is lank stilte terwyl Bernard hierdie nuwe idee van Daisy oorweeg.

“Goed, Daisy. Ek verstaan jou besorgdheid. Ons kan beslis probeer om gesonder te lewe. Maar ek het ‘n paar voorwaardes van my eie: jy hou op met rook en ons be-gin in die oggende vroeg oefen. Ek sal vir jou ‘n program uitwerk om fi ks te word sodat jy saam met my kan hardloop. En ek sal persoonlik toesien dat jy nie afwyk nie, maak nou nie saak waar in die wêreld ons

ookal mag wees nie. Dan gee ek glad nie om om hierdie kosrevolu-sie met jou te deel nie.”

Bernard stoot sy stoel beslis te rug en voor Daisy oor haar verba-sing is, verdwyn hy in ‘n stofwolk terug lande toe.

Daardie middag doen Daisy met nuwe inspirasie inkopies. Sy kyk met nuwe insae na elke produk en oorweeg die bestanddele en voedingswaarde noukeurig. Elke nou en dan pluk sy die rooi boek uit haar mandjie uit en slaan ‘n paar feite na. Dis eers toe sy met haar gunsteling bottel Shiraz in haar hand staan dat die volle implikasies van die nuwe leefstyl haar tussen die oë tref.

“Geen rooi wyn saam met die skaapribbetjie vanaand nie? Geen kapokaartappels of pap nie? Regtig, Daisy – brokkoli, avokadopeer en blomkoolrys?” tik sy haarself oor die vingers.

“En nie eers één sigaret saam met die whiskey vanaand wanneer jy en Bernard op die stoep sit en kuier nie?” koggel haar alter ego haar. “En whiskey? Whiskey? Niks brandewyn en Coke nie?”

Is daar ‘n kuur vir onnoselheid?Die meisie slaag matriek goed en haar bejaarde ouers van die plaas, skraap hulle laaste geld bymekaar om hulle begaafde dogter verder te laat studeer in wetenskappe aan die beste universiteit in Amerika.

Drie jaar gaan verby toe sy weer eendag bel, met die nuus dat sy haar eerste graad geslaag het, en dat sy vir hulle die produk wat sy uitgevind het gaan stuur uit dankbaarheid dat hulle hul laaste ou geldjies gegee het om haar te laat leer.

As hulle elke week elkeen ‘n teelepel van die goed drink is hulle gewaarborg dat hulle gou-gou jonger sal wees, en met elke drinkslag daarna steeds jonger sal word.

So gemaak so gedaan… en ‘n paar maande gaan verby. Die dogter beslu-it om die vakansie huis toe te gaan aangesien sy baie verlang. Op die plaas aangekom, skrik sy amper om te sien hoe jonk en mooi haar ma geword het, daar waar sy die stoep vee.

Haar ma het soos ‘n vrou in haar dertigerjare gelyk, pragtig gebou en soos in die outyd, met die oulikste kleintjie op haar rug vasgebind.

“Hallo Ma!!” skree sy, “maar Ma het jonk geword! Waar is Pa?”

“Anner storie daai” sê haar ma.“Die derde aand wat ons daai goed

van jou drink , raak jou Pa toe so suurgat dat ek baie gouer as hy jonger geword het dat hy daai bottel gryp en hom heeltemal uitsuip!”

” Nou waar is Pa dan nou?”Ma: “Gmmmf! Hier sit die

swernoot op my rug!!!

On Saturday the annual national Sanlam Roadshow brought the Takalani Sesame Muppets to Makhado (Louis Trichardt) for a day of family fun. Die Soutpansberg Muurbal Uitdaagtoernooi is die naweek van 15 tot 17 Augustus by die Soutpansberg Muurbalklub in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) aangebied. Spanne van twee Pretoria klubs, Adelaars en Kentron, het meegeding teen ‘n Limpopospan en die Soutpansberg Muurbalklub. Strawwe kompetisie in die Aafdeling het ‘n naelskraap oorwinning besorg aan die besoekende span van Adelaars, met Limpopo in die tweedeplek. Die Bafdeling is gewen deur Polokwane, met Soutpansberg in die tweedeplek. Die klub het hul dank uitgespreek teenoor die borge, Autozone, Berg Avo’s, Donova Products, Comien Veggies en Macridge, wat die toernooi moontlik gemaak het. Afgeneem, voor van links na regs, is Soutpansberg se Aspan Hannes Spies en Erik Welman. Agter is Dirk du Preez, Bertus Guillaume en Theo Schlieben.

Ná ‘n aanvanklike stadige be gin tot die wedvlugseisoen spog oom Danie Lourens met twee wenne in die Soutpansberg Resiesduifklub se wedvlugte vanaf Bloemfontein die afgelope naweek.

Oom Danie palm beide die 10B- en 10C-opewedvlugte in. Sy wenduif in die 10B-wedvlug voltooi die 754 km afstand met ‘n spoed van die 774.78 meter

per minuut. Hy was ook 5de, 8ste en 9de in dié wedvlug. Marx Hokke was 2de, 3de en 7de, Tiny de Klerk 4de en 10de en Hans Marx 6de.

Oom Danie se duif se wen-spoed in die 10C-wedvlug was 738.19 meter per minuut. Hier was hy ook 2de, 5de, 6de en 10de. Marx Hokke was 3de, 7de en 8ste, Hans 4de en Tiny 9de.

Dallien van Niekerk, O/14skut van Hoërskool Louis Trichardt, het die afgelope naweek verskeie medaljes verower by die Limpopo Kampioenskappe wat by Hoërskool Ben Vorster gehou is. Sy verower twee silwer medaljes vir 3punt posisies en ‘n algehele tweedeplek. Sy het ook sertifikate ontvang, nadat sy ‘n tweedeplek behaal het in die kategorieë vir lê, staan en knielskiet.

The winners of this year’s SACM (South African Custodial Management) charity Golf Day was the team of Surat. The Soutpansberg Golf Club in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) once again played host to this popular annual event. From left to right are the winning team members: Colbert Machumela, Khangale Malange and Mutshutshudzi Mbedzi. They won with a total of 94 Stableford points. Hierdie karatekas van die KSI (Kimura Shukokai Internasionaal) Karateklub in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) het die afgelope naweek deelgeneem aan die Limpopo Kampioenskappe in Polokwane. Voor, van links na regs, is Keagan Mocke (brons kumité), Maartin van Wyk (brons kumité) en Jordan Mocke (brons kumité). Agter is hulpafrigter Gerhard (Wors) Oosthuizen, Fitzgerald Dzivhani (brons kumité), Inus Steyn (silwer kata en kumité), Matthew Taylor, Johan Lordan (brons kata en kumité), Owen Venter (goud kumité), Jess Henning (goud kumité en brons kata)

Hoërskool Louis Trichardt het onlangs hul sportsterre vereer vir hul prestasies gedurende die jaar.

Die geleentheid was die skool se win-tersportprysuitdeling op Maandag, 4 Au-gustus, by die skool. Daar is toekennings gemaak vir hokkie, netbal en rugby.

Die volgende seuns het almal hul eerste hokkiesertifi kate ontvang, nadat hulle ook aangewys as provinsiale naaswenners: Kudzingana Ronewa, Turner de Swardt, PJ Greyling, Lukie Enslin, Heine de Jager, Mulisa Phophi, Ndhivho Khorommbi, Divhani Musekwa, Richard Lambert, DJ du Preez, Phillip Apea-Adu, Ditau Man-dobe en Raumeen Jamadar. Leerlinge wat

almal ‘n eerste balkie gekry het vir hokkie was Lian van Emmenis, John Kuhne, Dian Prinsloo, Erich König, Mukonazwothe Sinthumule, Louan Fogwell, Juan Au-camp, Julius Kemp en Olwin Khorommbi.

André du Preez het sy eerste rugby-balkie ontvang, terwyl die volgende spe-lers almal ‘n tweede balkie ontvang het: Kagiso Marakalla, Paul Herman, Luhan Holtzhausen, Louan Fogwell, Chris Knoe-sen, John Kuhne, Shanline Mohamed, Jan-dré Cronjé, Edzani Muswede, Madambi Muvhulawa, Thabelo Maiwashe, Yondi Mutshembele, Taabang Korommbi en Olwin Korommbi.

Alton-Junior Siima, wat ook ‘n lid van

die provinsiale span is, het sy erekleure in rugby ontvang.

Die volgende meisies het ook hul eer-ste sertifi kate ontvang vir hul prestasies in netbal: Khethi Machochi, Ninke le Roux, Mariesa Smit, Khodani Phuthu, Maranatha Magwira, Vhuthu Sadiki en Nolita Nganasi.

Netbalspelers wat almal ‘n eerste bal-kie ontvang het, was Zwinake Mbedzi, Koketso Baloyi, Khuthi Makananise, Lesedi Molokana en Madzanga Mutshinya en Zwivhuya Mudau. Sandra Muluvhu en Didi Museri het albei hul eerste erekleure ontvang, terwyl Donrie Potgieter haar tweede erekleure ontvang het.
