Local chicken is lekker!Locally produced chicken hascome out tops in a chicken tastingsurveyconductedbytheSouthAf-rican Poultry Association (Sapa),settling a claim that local poultrywas of lesser quality than over-seas imports.

The results of the chicken tastingsurvey, held inCosmoCityandPark-town North in Johannesburg thisweek, showed that the majority ofpeople preferred locally producedchicken to imports from Brazil andHolland. In recent weeks, claims have been

made around the quality of localmeat, with suggestionsmade that lo-cally produced meat was of inferiorquality. Sapa, which looks after theinterests of the local poultry indus-try, disputed this.To find out whether SouthAfrican

consumers preferred local chicken,Sapa conducted a “blind tasting”chicken survey at the Youth Centrein Cosmo City and The Local GrillinParktownNorth,ownedbyrestau-rateur Steven Maresch. About 50

consumers participated in the Cos-mo City survey, with 12 people sit-ting down to taste in ParktownNorth, including journalists fromThe Sunday Times, Your Family,True Love, Farmers Weekly, Caxtoncommunity newspapers, two profes-sional chefs and a qualified hospital

dietician.Consumers had to rate the taste of

thechickenpiecesinaquestionnaireSapa created with the assistance ofanauditing firm,BinderDijkerOtte. The audited results showed that 22participantsat theCosmoCityvenuepreferred SA produced chickenthighs compared to 16 who liked theimports, while 33 chose local drum-sticks over the 13 who preferred theimports.“The results clearly show that as-

sertions that our product is of inferi-or quality is absolute rubbish,” saysSapa senior executive, broiler liai-son, SolMotsepe. “Local consumers, including journalists, know whatthey like andonlybuywhat theypre-fer. And in this case, clearly local islekker.”According toMotsepe the industry

was awaiting the decision by Minis-ter Rob Davies to review the tariffsthat Sapa have applied for throughInternational Trade AdministrationCommission of South Africa. The fi-nal decision on this issue is expectedby mid-August.

Ways to weather a weighty winterLet’s just put it out there. When it comes to lookingyour best, winter sucks! And if the rain pound-

ing outside and your lat-est book purchase aren’tenough to keep you in-side, the three hundredinstagram photos of hotchocolate and thefacebook updates ofcrackling fires and mov-ies will.I like to blame it on our

need to have a little extralayer to fight thecold, butthis year I decidedenough was enough. So,donned in my gym gear,I left the house to provewinterwrongandheadedto my local coffee shop towrite this article.• ExerciseThis should go without saying, but

I need to put it in anyway. Get up anddo some exercise! Now I don’t expectyou to swim in the freezing Atlanticfor two hours, all you need to do ismakeaneffort tobuildupasweat eve-ry couple of days. Why not join WalkForLife (http://

www.walk4life.info/),buyarebound-er (amini trampoline) which you canuse from the comfort of your livingroom (http://www.reboundsa.co.za/) or check out your local squashleague. Whatever is fun for you, thatis the key.• Look insideMake time for some introspection.

If you’re anything likeme, youwouldlove to know why those sneaky kilos

are finding theirway onto your scale.Keep a diary, or get to work ten min-utes early soyoucansit in the carandprepare for the day. I found that hyp-notherapyreallyhelpedmefigureoutwhy I viewed food and a healthy life-style the way I did and replace the in-correct thinking with a better atti-tude.• Don’t stop eatingI’d like toreplace thenormalrhyme

of an apple a day with this: An Applea Day is great if it is replacing an un-healthysnack.Watchwhatyou’reeat-ing. If you just read “Be hungry”, Iwant you to go back and read it again. If you’re hungry – eat! But eat theright stuff.• Get lots of sleepI know you like to make the most

of your weekend or day off, but re-

member that they arethere for you to relax!Make sure you are get-ting enough rest as youare far more likely tocrave sugar and missyour work-out if you aretired. You need at least6–8hoursof sleepatnightand add a nap over theweekend if you have astressful lifestyle.• Keep accountableIt’s much harder to

load up on treats at yourmonthly shop if youknow you’ll have to tellsomeoneabout it thenextday. Start a WhatsAppgroup with a few friendsor commit to telling yourpartnerwhen you eat un-

healthy or skip your work-out formore than two days. If you’d like tobe a bit more removed from the per-son, book a few sessions with a lifecoach.• Take your vitaminsThere is a definite correlation be-

tween lacking vitamins and trying toreplace thembyeatingmore food.Ex-tra vitamins in winter will have theadded benefit of fighting off colds andensuring ahealthy skin. Find anutri-tionist in your area to make sureyou’re taking the right vitamins foryour lifestyle.Of course, the best thing would be

to do all these things on a consistentbasis. If change scares you, try mak-ing just one change and only add an-otherwhenyou’vegotthatonewaxed.– Karen Visser

Method:

Place a large frying pan over a medium heat. Place the chicken

breasts between two sheets of cling-wrap and thin out with a

rolling pin or mallet. Combine the breadcrumbs with the cheese,

salt and paprika. Place this in a shallow, wide bowl. Place the

beaten eggs in a similar bowl (big enough to dunk the chicken

into). To coat the chicken, dunk it first into the egg mixture and

then place into the crumbs, coating the chicken well and patting

down the crumbs. Place the chicken in the frying pan and allow to

fry for 2 minutes per side until the crumbs are crispy and the

chicken is cooked through but still moist. Serve hot with a fresh

salad or roasted vegetables.

You feel quite amorous and affectionate now and will very much want toshare this time with someone you love or at least with congenial company.Your creative or artistic inclinations are also stimulated, and your work in

these areas will be especially satisfying and successful at this time.

(22 December - 21 January)CAPRICORN

Emotional well-being and contentment characterize this time period. You feel quite relaxedand carefree, and this would be a splendid time for a vacation. Laziness, self-indulgence, and

expecting everything to work out well with no effort on your part are negative possibilities now.You feel very lucky and you are likely to be lax or extravagant with your money.

(21 January - 20 February)

AQUARIUS

Doors open and new opportunities for personal and professional growthpresent themselves. Any initiative or action you feel inclined to take at thistime is likely to lead to a positive outcome for you. Partnerships or joining

with others for mutual benefit is favored.

PISCES(20 February - 21 March)

Your amorous desires and romantic urges are very strong now. In all of your relationships, whether romantic or not, you feel quite warm and affectionate. You are less competitive, more interested in pleasing others and creating harmony. You may also feel compelled to

do something creative or artistic, something to express your craving for beauty.

ARIES(21 March - 21 April)

You find it stressful to balance needs for freedom and independence with needs for loveand intimate companionship. You really behave quite oddly or aloof right now which

will put others off considerably thus affording you the space you need, but at a cost. Youare also attracted to the exotic, offbeat, unusual, or bizarre at this time.

TAURUS(21 April - 21 May)

Your personal ambitions and drive to assert yourself and make an impact on the worldmeet with considerable opposition now. Other people or external forces over which you haveno control seem to subtly undermine your efforts - or try to overpower you altogether. You

need to stand up for yourself, perhaps in a David-and-Goliath type of situation.

GEMINI(21 May - 22 June)

You may be considering a major overhaul or revision in your ambitions at this time. If youdo not have a sense of meaningful purpose or a passionate commitment to anything, youwill want to reassess where you are going and why. If you do have a clear goal, you can

make significant progress and work with great satisfaction now.

LEO(23 July - 24 August)

There is much activity; you move rapidly from one thing to another and ahectic, somewhat stressful pace is likely. Many errands, phone calls, letters

which require a response, and other "busywork" is on the agenda. A minor butrather tense confrontation is likely.

VIRGO(24 August - 23 September)

The emphasis is now on long-range financial planning, thinking about futuresecurity, and formulating strategies to achieve your ambitions. Your ability to

study quietly, to concentrate on complex mental work, and to think deeplyabout serious matters is much better than usual.

CANCER(22 June - 23 July)

You feel rather youthful and reckless. You may enjoy playing pranks and engaging in otherchildish delights at this time. Needless to say, this may be embarrassing to friends and

family! Nevertheless, acting out of character is a good thing to do now, and you will notregret doing it as long as you don't get so reckless that you hurt yourself or someone else.

LIBRA(23 September - 23 October)

You find it stressful to balance needs for freedom and independence with needs for loveand intimate companionship. You really behave quite oddly or aloof right now which

will put others off considerably thus affording you the space you need, but at a cost. Youare also attracted to the exotic, offbeat, unusual, or bizarre at this time.

SCORPIO(23 October - 23 November)

A sudden accident, trauma, violent outburst, or fever are possibilities now. If youhave been withholding any animosity, not taking what you need for yourself, or

been in any sort of ongoing battle with another, the stress is likely to becomeunbearable. You also tend to force yourself unmercifully now, which will backfire.

SAGITTARIUS(23 November - 22 December)

The market environmentManyof us knowabout themarketfor green grocers in Epping wherefarm produce is traded. But estateagents work in the property mar-ket and book sellers form part ofthe bookmarket. Sowhat is amar-ket then?

Any business does business in somemarket and a market can be describedas a place where buyers and sellers ofgoods or services meet and prices aredetermined by supply and demand. An auction is thus a perfect exampleof a market. And that is exactly whathappens daily at the green grocersmarket in Epping, as well as in theproperty market, etc.

Therefore you need to know themarket to where you would like to sellyour goods and services. We call it atargetmarket; forexample,yourprod-uct or service is aimed at elderly peo-

ple, babies, teenagers, wealthypeople, home owners, lovers of the outdoors, women, etc. and you advertise toreach that specific target market.

However, buyers always look forcheaper prices or better quality orwhatever, and therefore there will al-ways be competition among the differ-ent suppliers of similar goods andservices, which is to the advantage ofconsumers.

So you need to know your competi-tors in the same market. If they arefinancially stronger than you, theywill probably have a bigger advertis-ing budget. You should also knowtheir strengths and weaknesses soyou can plan your marketing accord-ingly. Furthermore, new competitorsregularly enter the market and youneed to stay up to date with who theyare and with what they offer.

Then from time to time, different

marketsoffercertainopportunitiesorthreats. An opportunity is a favoura-ble situation that if utilised, can earnextra money for your business duringa certain season. Threats on the otherhand, can cause you great harm andcost you money, if not handled timelyand in an appropriate manner.

To have a business is to be a playerin one or other market and to makea good profit you need to be a skilledplayer and you need to be alert to whatis happening in that market.

David Malherbe and DewaldScholtz will discuss this topic in moredetail Monday evening from 19:00 till20:00 on Radio KC 107.7FM in the pro-gram “You the Entrepreneur”.(David Malherbe is a business and

career consultant and lives inWelling-ton. He can be contacted via his webpage www.jedidiah.org.za or at 021-873 0262.)
