A press conference was held a few days ago in Australian capital cities on Liao Yiwu s new book God is Red . We have a special interview with Mr Liao published in this issue. I am proud to have a part in promoting the book to the community and churches because his insight and writing can really testify the prevailing harassment faced by churches in China. In particular as Mr Liao is not a Christian, his writing is free of theological agenda thus could be more appealing and shocking to the general readership.

Despite the propaganda made to the Chinese church communities around the country, the publishing body was a bit disappointed by the low profile response from them. But this was what I had foreseen.

Chinese churches in general are more concerned about spreading the Gospel compared to the caring and serving of people and the society, in particular on the frontier of culture enrichment. Hence, many Christians are not too keen on this new book even from such a notable writer on a theme of religious oppression.

Mr Liao s writing sounds like call of the wilderness, on his own he is telling his country folks the heartbreaking reality of their own country. In China he was isolated from the crowds around him; out of China he is a free man but longing to return to a forbidden home of himself. Now and then, he is still in the wilderness. His call, now being heard by people around the world, is telling vividly the situation and feeling of those in China who have been oppressed, forgotten, strayed, enslaved, belittled

I believe all Christians are called upon to serve the world in a Christ-like manner and to become live testimony in order that hope and righteousness can come to this world thus people know our mighty Creator. So I think Christians should not neglect this call of the wilderness. Over the weeks we have been introducing Mr Liao to our readers through our special columns in the hope that the call can touch your hearts.
