The Bligh s government suffered a wipe-out defeat in the Queensland election held last weekend where the number of Labor Party s parliamentary seat had been drastically reduced from 51 to 7, whereas Campbell Newman, himself not being a senator at the time, had led the opposition Liberal National Party to form the new government in overwhelming majority of 78 seats. Three years ago the Bligh's government was still holding the majority seats, and in particular her remarkable performance in response to the State flooding last year had won back much popularity support for her and Labor. That indeed prompted to the replacement of the then opposition leader John-Paul Langbroek by Campbell Newman.

Many people reckon Bligh's downfall was caused by rising opposition from the unions and the general public to her insistent privatisation policy on Queensland assets with a view to reducing government debt in times of global financial crisis. Upon the defeat last week, she had accepted full responsibility and thus resigned as Senator. Yet some people regard her as irresponsible by withdrawing herself from a down-going Party and disappointing the electorate in long-standing support of her.

Without any experience as a Senator, it is too early to tell whether Newman is the right man to govern the state or even to take control of all the Senators of various interests within his own party. Undisputedly though he is now the people s leader, because he has indeed won support of the people through their voting; this is the fundamental of democracy. At least over the next three years he has been given the mandate to rule Queensland. In the event that he cannot prove himself to be a good leader, Queensland people of course can choose to vote him out alike when the next election comes. The general people will be in control - this is the key of democracy.

On last Sunday there was another election being held in Hong Kong. Only 1194 election committee members had the right to vote for the Chief Executive of Hong Kong with a population of seven millions. In the course of the election campaign there had been endless scandals about the two candidates Henry Tang and CY Leung, while there had been interference from different China officials on the election committee. Accordingly, a mock election conducted by a Hong Kong University research project had returned 54% blank ballot from 220,000 participants in representation of their dissatisfaction on this small circle election. Eventually, CY Leung turned out to be elected for 689 votes as the 4th Chief Executive of Hong Kong.

Many Hong Kong people who have migrated to Australia may still consider Hong Kong as a more vibrant or opportunistic place to live in, but from these two elections I feel I am in a country where I am more respected by the people in power.
