On the 14th of November the Melbourne Chinese Community Social Services Centre (CCSSC) organized a

Thank You Volunteers Day . All the volunteers who had played a role in the services offered by the organization over the year were invited for a free lunch on the day as recognition of their contribution. Over a hundred of the volunteers joined the function where appreciation certificates were handed out by the CCSSC Chairman, souvenir medals were also distributed to volunteers with long and remarkable services.

CCSSC all along is one of the biggest organizations offering social services in the Melbourne Chinese community in areas such as migrant settlement, elderly and family support, counselling etc. Most of the activities are planned and organized by professional social workers, and yet are mainly carried out with assistance from a big team of volunteers, as they themselves apprehend a need for the participation and promotion of those activities. Their volunteering immensely contributes to the building of a harmonized community and the enhancement of personal life style.

Volunteer service can promote a spirit and culture of mutual assistance in the community. Today you are helping others in need, and the next day others could be helping you in turn. CCSSC should be commended not just for the provision of social support services but as well for the encouragement of this collaboration culture.

Through this Thank You Volunteers Day , it is reaffirmed that human relation is not just about trading off ; the selfless serving of others is indeed a kind of respect to others. According to the concept of Mencius, people will not stay away if they could be of any help to those who are under threat; and this is in line with human incentive to serve as volunteers. Volunteers do not support individualism and do not act only upon self interest. Given our ability, we will respond to any call of service.

Actually there are plenty of opportunities for anyone who wants to volunteer in Chinese community services. I hope more people can take on this challenge to broaden their horizon by serving the community.
