Overview of graduates in our business…..

• Recruit about 70-75 pa in the UK.• Recruit around 180 pa in the USA• Launched pilot international program in last few year, 15 candidates recruited into

7 countries.• Generally use a generic 1 year extended induction & development program

globally, then plug into internal development process.• Many graduates now in senior positions (10 years on).ie.Ops directors, senior

business managers, specialist senior managers & directors in Purchasing/HR/Sales.• We value them greatly….they are the lifeblood of our management succession plan

• Opportunities endless to start own business.

Why graduates, what benefits…?

• Young, high intellect proteges to manage the future business• Current western world demographics very frightening• Chosen the industry of their own volition, therefore well motivated• Learn & develop quickly, agile minded • Bring good technological skills and no preconceived ideas.• Different ways of doing things….no history• Energetic & enthusiastic, often challenge traditional practises• Keen to make their mark and move up the career ladder

• Opportunities endless to start own business. “Compass Group…..the worlds leading foodservice

company”.

General characteristics at selection process……

• Poor dress sense & deportment (Europe & the USA have cracked this issue)• Very inexperienced at interviews & assessment procedures• Generation ‘Y’ with different attitudes to work, but…….. always sparkling

personalities!• Finance skills generally poor• Linguistic ability very limited in the UK yet global opportunities demanded • Technical skills usually underdeveloped (know little about food or service).• Experience in the workplace often very limited ( we only shortlist candidates

with good placement/work experience)

• Opportunities endless to start own business.

What are the challenges with grads……….?

• Very high maintenance at the early stages (1st 2 years)• Often bring lots of baggage and need lots of coaching & support – strong mentors

needed.• Naïve to working routines, politics & relationships• Require constant feedback & attention.• Want to run before walking established.• Don’t want to work in operations (unrealistic job expectations)• Can be very expensive pro rata with productivity in the early stages & therefore

retention practises imperative

• Opportunities endless to start own business.

What have we done to ensure quality inputs……….?

• Developed relationships with centers running the programmes and content we require (SHU in our top 3)

• Made inputs into those centers ie. helped deliver lectures/case studies/seminars/placements and course validations/advisory board membership/awards ceremony sponsorship

• Participated in staff development to ensure our business is fully understood and changes are communicated

• Assisted with resource development and betterment of teaching provision

• Opportunities endless to start own business.
