The outcome of the Federal Election held last week is still uncertain; it will be days before we can tell who will form the next government. Unlike previous elections where the various political parties focused in selling their governing plans and strategies, this election is just like a soap opera where immaterial stories had stolen the attention of the electorate over the past five weeks. We still have much to learn in our democracy.

On the Election Day, it was most disappointing to see the Victorian Labour Party supporters soliciting votes for Gillard on the ground that she is a Victorian, instead of persuading the voters with her good governing policy and telling how she is a reliable and capable leader. I think this is a very unwise and immature campaign tactic. Federal Election is about choosing the most appropriate leader for the whole country and it is inappropriate to make any reference to the home state of the candidate. Did the Victorian Labour Party hinting to Victorians that a PM form Victoria could have favourable treatment to Victoria? If yes would it be in the interest of the whole country? If no why Victorians have to vote for a Victorian candidate?

I believe every government should embrace the different needs of the electorate from all walks of life. We urge more Chinese to participate in politics because relatively we are under represented; we are happy to make them better known to the Chinese community as we believe many Chinese would be considering in support of them. But we also believe that the support should not only come from our ethical tie. As voters, we also expect them to demonstrate their visions and capabilities, as well as their understanding of and passion in serving the Chinese community.

Upon immigration to Australia, we should endeavour to understand, care about and participate in all tiers of government election in fulfilling our right and responsibility as citizens.
