It is a good gamble to get into the pick up/ utility market, as it is predominantly a Japanese manufacturer’s turf. When people look at the better selling car / truck / utility in Australia, it is not a sedan / hatch. It is a Japanese brand 4 wheel drive dual cab utility.
Volkswagen aimed at this fastest growing and highly profitable market with a single engine and body model. It is so focused for making a success, that Volkswagen chose the highly popular dual cab 4 door design with a body tray at the back. Also, it is 6 speed manual with either rear wheel drive or 4 wheel drive.
From memory, Toyota Hi-lux, Mitsubishi Triton, Mazda and Ford all have dual cab 4 wheel drive. They are very impressive vehicles as well.
The new kid in the block, Volkswagen, has entered a highly lucrative market, but will they succeed? Yes, I think so. My reasons are the follows. The seats

are sculpted, very supportable and comfortable. It will easily shame some of the popular SUV and even up market sedan. The rear bench seat is comfortable, with good leg room and shoulder room for the rear occupants. It is designed to carry 5 people and passengers can feel that the rear seats are not an added on, but come with a good design.
The external appearance of the Amarok is blended in with long lasting look, a fair and square taste plus a courageous modern design. This design mixes very well with a large Volkswagen emblem up in the front grille. With all that, it gives you a hint that it might look like a cousin of the more powerful Volkswagen Tourag. With the high end decorative chromes, bigger alloy wheels and side steps, it is more practical and looks a little trendy and aggressive of which a lot of younger customer would like to see.
The size of the vehicle is slightly bigger, wider and longer, but it is a good size,

that you don’t have to worry too much in getting into a shopping centre or narrow street parking. The bigger size gives its driver and occupants something to celebrate about. As workers deserve good OHS (occupational Health and Safety) environment, the Amarok not only rewards its drivers with good sized and comfortable car, it has a class leading 5 stars ANCAP ratings as well. If I were the company fleet manager, I will try VW Amarok, as it has a lot of advantages.
As for some technical specifications, the Amarok is available as either a 2WD rear-wheel drive utility or select vehicle or one of two 4MOTION all-wheel drive systems namely: firstly as an all time permanent all-wheel drive with Torsen differential and secondly, as an all wheel drive system with rigid-lock four-wheel drive, with selectable front-wheel drive and low off-road gearing.
It has a 2.0-litre diesel engine developing 120kW of power and 400Nm of torque. Powerful torque is available from a low 1,500 rpm. This is achieved by using twin turbo technology. The twin turbo squeezes power from the diesel and make it acts like a bigger engine. On the other hand, a smaller capacity helps the Amarok to save fuel. The claimed (combined) fuel consumption figure is 7.9litre for 100kms. On paper, it is
very impressive, but driving condition and habits will change the result easily
To a number of commercial users, the Amarok has a payload of 1,150kg, which is very convenient as Utility is not meant for carrying things that is too heavy. Its towing capacity is 2,800kg, so it is the right kind of towing power that most people will expect.
What would you expect from the Amarok? It is a serious commercial and recreational vehicle, in terms of its ability and equipment. The 4 wheel drive and low range adjustment is done through a range of cleverly marked push buttons around the gear shift. The Highline model is the top is the top of the range model, which has 18-inch alloy wheels and extra chrome detailing. Side steps and a decorative anti roll bar at the tray. It's priced around $53,000.
How does it drive like? It is comfortable and ticks all the right boxes. The powerful low torque makes life easier for driving. Turning circle is good and it provides adequate feel but filtered road condition back to the driver. The gear box is good in terms of smooth gear changing and just a short throw but not laborious. Have a look at yourself and see if you like it.
