In this issue of the people feature story, we have interviewed Mr. Tom Huynh who is the publisher of the Melbourne publication Master Now . We learned about how he arrived in Australia as a Vietnamese boat people and since then served long in the Indo-chinese community until lately he was awarded the Victorian Refugee Recognition Record.

It is indeed a hard challenge for any first generation immigrant to let go their past achievement, social relationship and support system in their homeland and then to go through the re-anchoring and re-building process all from the beginning here in Australia. It is even worse for those refugees fleeing from a war torn homeland without any equip and option and landing here without bringing along any of their own asset. Many would be keen just to chase after personal ambition; but praiseworthy are some of those who would choose to serve the community with their thankful hearts.

In our people feature column, we have interviewed notable figures like Samuel Pho who is now the Chief Commander of the Hong Kong Salvation Army in charging of a selfless religious organisation diligently serving people in need around Hong Kong and China; we have also interviewed Hieu Van Le, the Lieutenant Governor of South Australia who has been enthusiastically promoting multiculturalism in community care through government operation. Mr. Tom Huynh, as reported in this issue, has been awarded because of the mainstream society s recognition of his unfailing passion in serving the Indo-chinese community over the years.

As a war refugee, the sense of intimidation and lack of security could make one to hide away from challenges thus tend to stay within owns small circle of life. There are not too many people of this kind who would take on social responsibility seriously and open up themselves to serving the community with full passion.

I hope the recognition of Mr. Tom Huynh can encourage more Chinese, irrespective of their background, to offer themselves for serving the community and contributing to the Australian society.
