Chaebol leaders above the lawNot one of the top ten
conglomerate
heads sentenced to prison since 1990served time, according to an
analysis byChaebul.com. All were eventually par-doned on the
pretext of saving theeconomy.
The studys results, released Tuesday,found that seven heads from
among thetop ten conglomerates in terms ofassets were sentenced to
a collectivetotal of 22 years and six months inprison since 1990,
but all were givensuspended sentences. In contrast, just25% of
people from the general publicreceived suspended sentences in
crimi-nal cases last year.
Also, the period of time between thesentence confirmation and
the pardonfor the conglomerate heads averagedjust over nine months.
The figures showcourts exonerating the corporate lead-ers for
various reasons with every trial,and the government generally
restoringtheir standing and authority within lessthan one year of a
confirmed guiltyverdict.
In August 1996, Samsung Groupchairman Lee Kun-hee was
sentencedto two years in prison suspended forthree years for
involvement in a slushfund for former President Roh Tae-woo. In
August 2009, he was sentencedto three years in prison suspended
for
five years following attorney KimYong-chuls declaration of
conscience.
Hyundai Group chairman ChungMong-koo was sentenced to threeyears
in prison suspended for five yearsin June 2008 for causing damages
toaffiliates through a slush fund andembezzlement. He was pardoned
just 73days later.
SK Group chairman Chey Tae-wonwas sentenced to three years in
prisonsuspended for five years in May 2008for a case involving
accounting fraud atSK Global, with his pardon coming 78days
later.
Hanjin Group chairman Cho Yang-ho was sentenced to three years
inprison suspended for five years forembezzlement and breach of
trust inJune 2000.
Hanwha chairman Kim Seung-yeonwas found guilty of violating
theForeign Exchange Control Act inJanuary 1994, and convicted of
assaultin September 2007. He was releasedwith suspended sentences
both times.
The Doosan Groups former chair-man Park Yong-sung and
currentchairman Park Yong-man were eachgiven suspended sentences in
July 2006for embezzlement and other crimes,only to be pardoned
around six monthslater.

Bajirak is a type of shellfish and itgrows mostly in Korea,
Japan, andChina. Apparently its English name ismanila clam or
little-neck (short-neck) clam. It is often used for mak-ing broth
for soup. I say it gives afresh taste. (It is hard to describe
thistaste)
Kalguksu means hand made, knifecut noodles. It is a summer time
mealapparently, but I think it is not prac-tical to cook in summer.
First of all,it is too hot to cook the soup insteamy weather.
Second of all, itmakes you warm while you are eat-

Ingredients for 2 people(Expected preparation time -5
minutes, Cooking time 15 minutes)Water 1500ml (3
pint)Shellfish
noodle soup ingredientsRaw kalguksu noodles for 2 peo-
ple (The pack I used was for 4 people Pulmuwon brand, 2300 won
for600g)
Shellfish 200g (including shells)1/2 an onion
1/6 a zucchini1 medium size potato1/6 a carrot1 stalk of spring
onion
Anchovy powder 2 tspSoy sauce 1 tbspSalt 3 sprinkles ( I added 6
sprin-
kles more later)
Preparation1. Soak the shellfish in salt water
for about 1 hour.2. Thin slice all the vegetables.
Cooking1. Boil the water.2. Add the anchovy powder and
shellfish.3. Boil it until the shellfish open
their shells.4. Rinse the noodles in cold water.5. Add the
noodles. Stir them with
chopsticks. (Make sure the noodlesdont stick to each other.)
6. Add all the vegetables.7. Boil it for about 5-6 minutes.8.
Add the soy sauce. Adjust the
taste with salt as you need.9. Serve it in a bowl. (Having
it
with Kimchi is quite good.)
