119 911Politics found to be most discussed topic on TwitterPolitics has been shown to be

topic with the most retweets byTwitter users. A joint poll by theHankyoreh, Korea Society OpinionInstitute, social media analysis firmCyram, a research team led by SNUsociology professor Jang Deok-jinand the Hankyoreh Social PolicyResearch Institute found that theissue Koreans deal with most onTwitter was overwhelmingly politics. This suggests that what takes place onTwitter may be a major variable in thisyears general and presidential elections.

Cyram and Professor Jang sresearch team analyzed some 230million tweets from 3,927,519Korean Twitter accounts betweenJuly and September of last year, andfound that the Tweets written byusers who deal mostly with politicswere retweeted an average of 25.8times, far more than those that dealtwith sports (6.05 times), culture-entertainment-arts (5.31 times),society (3.69 times) and economicsand business management (3.15times). As a retweet in Twitter spaceis an expression of interest orendorsement, this could be inter-preted as most Twitter users beinghighly interested in political issues.

It was those in their 20s and 30swho played a leading role in drivingpolitical discussion on Twitter. Anonline panel poll by Professor Jangsteam of 2,000 Twitter users and

1,000 non-users revealed that theaverage age of the Twitter users was28.0, while that of the non-userswas 34.4. Some 77.4% of the Twitterusers who responded to the surveywere in their 20s and 30s.

The Twitter users were also shownto be politically active. A poll by theHankyoreh showed a strong corre-lation between frequent Twitter useand voting. Some 73.4% of Twitterusers responded that they woulddefinitely vote in the 2012 generalelection, greater than the 65.3% ofnon-users who said they would. Theyounger the respondee, the biggerthe gap. For Twitter users, 66.7% ofthose aged 19 to 29 and 66.1% ofthose in their 30s expressed anactive intention to vote, while fornon-users, only 49.1% of thoseaged 19 to 29 and 61.8% of those intheir 30s did. Professor Jang predict-ed those in their 20s and 30s who havediscussed politics through Twitterwould cause great changes in the2012 general and presidential elections.

The sentiment on Twitter is lean-ing towards the opposition. In apanel poll conducted last August andSeptember by Professor Jangs teamand pollsters Embrain of 2,000Twitter users, 61.3% of respondentssaid in a two-way race, they wouldsupport Ahn Cheol-soo, while16.1% said they would support ParkGeun-hye.

On appelle a parachuter sarcas-tiquement.

A black bouquet of flowers went up

yesterday on the blog of Unified

    Democratic Party standing adviser Kim

Geun-tae. Kim may have passed away,

    but his message carries on.

His final blog entry was titled

"Occupy 2012." It was written on

October 18, just before his health began

to deteriorate. In it, he locates the case of

the Arab Spring, the Greek financial cri-

sis, and the Occupy Wall Street move-

ment in the US in the social inequality

and injustice and the US brand of neo-

liberalism, while offering his own solu-

    tion.

Its final words state, "In South Korea,

where finance has less power than poli-

tics compared to the US, there isn't any

need to occupy East Yeouido where all

the exchange firms are. It is enough for

us to occupy West Yeouido where the

National Assembly is, and Jongno where

the Cheong Wa Dae is. Fortunately, we

have two chances to do so next year in

2012. Let's give our all to participating.

Only engaged people create power, and

the power thus created will set the course

    for the world."

Kim Geun-tae was not a man of

extremes. In his battles with the Park

    Chung-hee administration in the 1970s

    and the Chun Doo-hwan administration

in the 1980s, he was ever concerned

    about presenting a "realistic alternative."

At the crucial moment, he opted for

    reform over revolution, participation over

struggling. This was also the reason for

his 1995 leap into politics. While serving

as a ruling party lawmaker under the Kim

    Dae-jung and Roh Moo-hyun administra-

tions, he worked to devise workable poli-

cy approaches such as a "democratic

    market economy" and "additional eco-

nomic growth for increased welfare serv-

    ices."

Two years ago, Kim set up a small

study group. Its members read up on a

wide range of areas, including the econo-

    my, finance, foreign relations, national

security, education, and labor. The rea-

sons for all this studying were twofold.

First, he felt that the reason democracy

    advocates and progressives had lost

power was because they had failed to

demonstrate the ability to address the suf-

fering of South Koreans. Second, he

determined that the results could be dis-

astrous if those same forces came back

into power in their incompetent condition

through a rebound effect from the poor

    performance of the Lee Myung-bak

administration. It was a very Kim Geun-

    tae concern.

The last passage in a blog entry from

September 19 can also be considered

along these lines. In it, Kim wrote, "The

problem is the Democratic Party. To put

it bluntly, the Lee Myung-bak adminis-

tration was born out of frustration with

    the Democratic Partys ten-year rule.

We need to recognize and reflect on

the fact that neo-liberalism set down deep

roots in South Korea for various reasons,

including the way the foreign exchange

crisis was handled during the Kim Dae-

    jung and Roh Moo-hyun administrations.

    Amid this reflection and introspection,

we need to offer a vision for taking the

presidency again. If we take over thanks

    to anti-MB [Lee Myung-bak] sentiment

without a clear vision or alternative, we

may be met with more stagnation and

    frustration."

Kim was admitted to Seoul National

    University Hospital in late November

and treated for cerebral venous thrombo-

sis, but he ran into a crisis with a cerebral

    hemorrhage during his treatment. On

December 27, he suddenly went into a

fatal condition as several organs failed all

at once. He passed away at 5:31 am

Friday with his family members present.

Kim was unable to leave a final mes-

sage to his family before his death. Now

his blog entries are his last political state-

    ments.

Kim Geun-tae is seen as a symbol and

    unswerving mainstay of the democratiza-

    tion movement against dictatorship, play-

ing a leading role in the campaign from

the Dark Ages of the late 1970s until the

early 1990s. He followed the path of

resistance since 1967, his junior year as

an economics student in the SNU busi-

ness college, when he forcibly inducted

into the military after taking part in cam-

    pus protests against presidential election

    improprieties. After returning to school

in 1970, he led demonstrations on cam-

pus and found himself a wanted man, on

the run until the end of the Park adminis-

tration in late 1979. He worked in labor

campaigning in the Incheon area before

joining the vanguard of the movement to

    bring down the dictatorship, spearhead-

ing the September 1983 establishment of

    the Youth Association for

    Democratization.

In September 1985, he was subjected

to torture and beatings a total of ten

times, which took him to the brink of

death. He endured water torture and elec-

trical shocks at the hands of such torture

    technicians as Lee Geun-an.

Kim's funeral is to take the form of the

"Public Funeral for Kim Geun-tae the

Democrat." The send off ceremony will

be held on January 3, with his remains to

be interred at the cemetery for democracy

martyrs at Maseok Moran Park in

    Gyeonggi. Kim previously stated his

    wishes to be buried there.

Participate, unite and occupy political power: Kim Geun-taes final message

    Happy Holidays!

Korea has two national holidaysabout New years day. One is calledShin jung (solar New years day) andthe other one is called Gu jung (lunarNew years day Chinese New yearsday) Apparently more than 90% ofpeople celebrate on lunar New yearsday and less than 10% of peoplecelebrate on solar New years day.

Ddeok Guk is the core meal ofNew Years day in Korea, but Koreanseat it on normal days as well. Itmeans purity (from its white color),maturity (there is a saying that if youhave Ddeok guk on New years day,you get one year older, its furthermeaning is I wish you becomemature), wishing long life (rice cakesused for ddeok guk are very long)and rich (rice cakes shape looks likecurrency in the old days). Of courseas a kid I wanted to grow up faster,

so I ate too much Ddeok Guk andgot sick instead.

The Ddeok guk I made wasenough for one meal without anyrice. I added some instant dumplings, some Koreans prefer eating rice cakesoup in this way and they use hand-made dumplings. My recipe below isa simple version,

Ingredients for 4 peopleMainSliced (garaeddeok) rice cake 400 gInstant dumplings 12 pieces

BrothDried kelp (1515 cm size)5 big dried anchovies8 cups of waterMinced garlic 1 tspSalt 1tsp

    Vegetables

1/3 of a zucchini1/2 an onion1 stalk of big spring onion

Toppings1 egg2 sheets of laverPepper (optional)

Prep1. Soak the rice cake in cold water

for about 20 minutes. (If it is dried)2. Thin slice the zucchini and onion.3. Diagonally slice the spring onion.4. Beat the egg, pan fry it, and thin

slice it. (Normally you fry the egg whitepart and yolk part separately, but Icooked it together. It is up to you.)

    5. Thin shred laver with scissors.

Cooking1. Pour the water into the pot then

add the kelp and anchovies.2. Simmer it on medium to low heat

for about 15 minutes. (It looks lightbrownish)

    3. Take out the kelp and anchovies (Ithrew them away).

    4. Add the zucchini and onion. Boilit for 1 minute.

    5. Add the dumplings, rice cakes, salt, and garlic.

    6. Boil it until it cooks. (It takes 3-4

minutes) Add the spring onion 30 sec-onds before you serve the dish. (I for-got to add it, and you can adjust thetaste with salt)

    7. Serve it in a bowl with the top-pings on top (egg and laver). You canadd pepper if you want. I always do, Ilove sprinkles of pepper .

NoteRice cakes for ddeok guk are

called garaeddeok and they are thesame rice cake for ddeokbokki (stirfried rice cake with gochujang) butjust a bit thicker. You slice themdiagonally then it looks like what Iused. If you bought a lot of garaed-deok, you can keep them in thefreezer.
